Stuck in Wally World

I had only been dx’d with MS for about a year and still getting use to the peachy things that would occur and how to overcome/endure them. When I needed to run up to the store. My husband and I decided to split up the shopping to get finished faster, so he went one way and I went the other. This was an older wally world and not a very busy one.
I had my cart and I was at the back end of an isle in a remote part of the store hidden behind pallets of merchandise. I went to take a step and nothing happened. My leg wouldn’t move!… It was like it was concrete. I went to step with my other leg and it decided to join the party and remained beside it’s companion. I stood there flailing my upper body around (I can tell you… it wasn’t pretty) and trying to get my legs in gear and looking for anyone to ask for help. It was completely empty… I mean like crickets chirping, nada, no bueƱo.

As I wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and after the panic subsided somewhat I thought to myself “this is just great, there is no way that Jim is going to see me back here, what the heck am I going to do?” I thought of various ideas none good and each more desperate as time ticked on. At one point I was ready to cry but started to laugh instead as the absurdity of the whole thing just hit me. “What if no one found me and I’m stuck here all night?”

I was just resigning myself to yelling my head off when I started to get feeling back into my legs somewhat. It was slow going but I managed to make it to the main isle and I ran into a friend. Thank the maker someone to shove me from behind and laugh with me (and at me, we’re friends after all). We were debating if I could get into the cart or not to get pushed over to my husband when Jim came into view. He lifted me up into the cart and I was pushed to the car. My dignity took a hit it and it wasn’t the first or last time, but I did realise that finding humor through the hurdles make the situations more tolerable.

I’ve had MS for over 20 years now through the good and the bad I try to laugh. If its bad day, well I’m just frickin peachy!

  1. Wow Amea- I’ve never heard of that. Freaking scary!!! But hearing you tell it after the fact I can see the amusement. It’s just all the planets aligned to bring you to that moment- an old Wally World, a deserted one at that, happen to be standing in a not so visible palce etc…. But your guardian angel must have been with you to deposit a friend right when you needed them most. But the idea of your frozen feet while your arms gestured like crazy and then being carted off in a shopping cart…. Well, that’s a story that only MS can tell. And a great one at that!

    Thank you for sharing!!
